About Me
Ashley Kortenhaus is the owner of Crean Counseling. She graduated from Monmouth University where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Sociology, Master’s in Educational Counseling, and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Professional Counseling. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of New Jersey and Nationally Certified Counselor with an additional certification in School Counseling. She has been working as a counselor for 7 years in various settings; including intensive in-community therapy, private practice, and with multiple educational institutions. She currently works as the Mental Health Counselor in a public high school, but has previous experience at a private school for students with disabilities. She also takes on intensive in-community therapy cases for a local agency partnered with New Jersey Children’s System of Care.
She has worked extensively with children (6-11), adolescents (11-17), and adults (18+) who are finding themselves challenged by any of the following: anxiety, depression, trauma, eating disorders, autism, self-esteem, family conflict, domestic violence, divorce, and more!
She utilizes standard Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT) most in sessions, although other treatment approaches are used depending on the person or condition. She also relies heavily on Dialectical-Behavior Therapy (DBT) and uses a Strengths-Based approach to help clients reach their fullest potential and learn the skills needed to tackle life's obstacles on their own! Her goal for clients is to help them feel empowered and safe, as well as have a nonjudgmental space to explore their strengths and needs.
About Crean Counseling
Why Crean?
Many people have asked why "Crean” for the name of this practice when the owner’s last name is not Crean. This name is of Irish origin and is an Anglicized form of O Croidheagain. A personal name from a diminutive of the Gaelic word "croidhe," meaning "heart," it is often used as a term of endearment and dates back to the 16th Century. This word also turns out to be Ashley’s maiden name. With deep connection to the heart and family in her personal life, Ashley felt there was no better name for her practice. She works with her clients to build the connection between the heart, mind, and body.
Why a four leaf clover?
You probably know of the tales of four leaf clovers being for good luck. The history surrounding clovers began in ancient times with the Druids, aka Celtic priests. Druids often carried three-leaf clovers with them to help them view evil spirits and keep them away. They began carrying four-leaf clovers for protection and good luck. Druids believed the leaves of these rare clovers represented faith, hope, luck, and love. Although carrying a four leaf clover will not cure your mental and physical ailments, incorporating a four leaf clover into the logo for Crean Counseling was a choice to keep childlike wonder, curiosity, fun, and a non-judgmental attitude in therapy.
